Save OurSelves: A Movement for Justice and Democracy Launches Its Faith Based Effort To Urge Governor Bentley To Expand Medicaid for 300,000 Uninsured Alabamians
(Montgomery, AL April 9, 2014) – Saving OurSelves, a coalition of more than 40 statewide organizations that have joined forces to counter extreme policies against citizens’ rights, is asking clergy of all denominations to dedicate Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014, and Sundays through the end of May to inform and remind parishioners of their moral responsibility to look after “the least of these.” (Matthew 25:35-40 KJV)
The State of Alabama has the opportunity to secure medical coverage for 300,000 residents to an extent never before within our reach by expanding Medicaid. This can open the door to better health and longer lives for fellow citizens. We believe that quality healthcare is not only a fundamental civil and human right, it is morally right to insure the uninsured and underinsured.
We ask that clergy affirm to their congregation their commitment to fulfill the word of God, Prov.19: 17: He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. (KJV) Do your part by asking your parishioners to sign the SOS Petition that urges Governor Bentley to expand Medicaid to the 300,000 uninsured or underinsured Alabamians.
As the divine voice of our community, we ask you to remember that your devotion to God requires you to be actively involved in promoting the well being of all people. Mark 12:31: “The second [greatest commandment] is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”And every fellow citizen, whether rich or poor, is our neighbor.
